Steps to Adjust Makita Miter Saw
#1. Clean your miter saw
Before you adjust your miter saw, give it a thorough cleaning. You can use an air compressor that has an air nozzle at the end of the hose to get rid of sawdust from the saw. You can then clean the entire saw with a clean cotton cloth which still checking for pitch build-up especially if you use your saw to cut softwoods. In case you find pitch build-up, you can use a rust and stain remover to get rid of the pitch buildup.
#2. Inspect the blade
Before you make any adjustments, check the blade and ensure that it is clean and sharp. You should also ensure that the blade is perfect for the types of cuts that you want to make. You should also ensure that the blade of your saw is square to the table (90 degrees). To adjust the blade, disconnect the power and then hold the blade guard out of the way.
Have a square flat on the table and then bring the saw blade down close to the table. Make sure that you move the square against the saw’s blade while you avoid the teeth. When the edge of the square is in total contact with the saw blade, the blade is now adjusted properly. If you find that a gap exists at the bottom or top edge of the square, you need to adjust again.
#3. Fence alignment
If you have a new saw, you will note that it has a flat table base that doesn’t require adjustment. However, if you are using an older saw, you may need to do some adjustments to ensure that the table base is flat. If you want to find out whether the table is flat, just place a metal straight edge on the edge at top of the table. You can check for gaps using a piece of paper.
It needs to check to ensure that the fence on the back edge is straight. You can do this with the help of a square that you can place along the length of the fence. Makita provides users with compact miter saws and most of them come with a split fence. Each of the two sections features knobs and screws for tightening and loosening the fence mounting. Make sure that you loosen and tighten the two sides of the fence until they are all in line and straight with each other.
#4. Adjusting the miter angle
Once you have checked that the fence is straight, the next thing you need to do is to adjust the miter angle. You need to start by setting the saw’s bevel angle to 0 degrees and then adjust the miter angle to 0 degrees too. For safety reasons, make sure that you unplug the miter saw from power and then place a combination square flat or rafter layout square against the fence’s front edge.
Lower the saw until the blade reaches its lowest position. Next, slide the square against the edge of the miter saw blade. When one edge of the square is securely against the fence and the other edge against the side of the miter saw blade, check to find out ant gaps between the blade and the fence. If you find any gap, then loosen the tightening knob and then do some adjustments to the miter angle to make sure the blade is square to the fence and then tighten the knob.
#5. Adjust the bevel angle
To adjust the bevel angle, keep your square on the edge and ensure that one edge is flat on the while the other one is straight from the table. Lower your miter saw and then slide the square to a point where the edge that is oriented vertically is square to the blade.
Visually or using a piece of paper, check to find out the presence of any gaps between the square and the blade. If there is a gap, make the bevel adjustment knob loose and then adjust the bevel until the saw is perfectly aligned to the square.
#6. Inspect the blade guard
The main purpose of a blade guard in a miter saw is to protect the blade when it is exposed. It is important if you go through your manual to get the correct instructions for adjusting the blade guard. Before you use a miter saw, always check to ensure that it raises and lowers smoothly. If you find that the blade guard doesn’t work smoothly, then look for instructions on the manual.
